Frontier Airlines Plane Featuring Tico the Costa Rican Two-Toed Sloth Receives Special Homecoming in San Jose

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA – Jan. 22, 2024 – Ultra-low fare carrier Frontier Airlines (NASDAQ: ULCC) today celebrated the homecoming of a special new aircraft featuring the Costa Rican two-toed sloth on its tail. Members of Team Frontier were at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) on Monday to welcome the aircraft to Costa Rican soil.

All Frontier plane tails feature a unique animal with a special name and back story. The Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth was chosen to honor Frontier destination partner Costa Rica and highlight this unique species, which is native to Costa Rica. Frontier Airlines serves San Jose via nonstop service from Atlanta.

“We are very excited to partner with the Costa Rican tourism industry to showcase our new aircraft honoring the beloved two-toed sloth,” said Tyri Squyres, vice president of marketing, Frontier Airlines. “We know how important this animal is to people across Costa Rica! Highlighting Tico in this special way shows our fondness for Costa Rica and its national symbol. Frontier is known for its commitment to the environment and its efforts to raise awareness for various species of animals across the Americas, many of which are endangered.”

In 2022, Frontier, in partnership with Visit Costa Rica, invited consumers to vote to name the animal tail by going to Frontier’s social media channels. Consumers chose between three name choices. Tico-- a name used to refer to natives of Costa Rica—won out!

Sloths are considered a national symbol of Costa Rica and the two-toed sloth is the larger of two sloth species found in the country. They are mostly nocturnal and can be distinguished by their white-ringed faces, brown snouts and shaggy coats. Sloths are mammals that spend around 90 percent of their lives upside down in the trees within rainforests and can live up to 30 years. Costa Rica is taking measures to ensure these unique creatures continue to thrive in their natural habitat.

Frontier is focused on more than low fares. The carrier offers customers the ability to customize travel to their needs and budget. For example, customers can purchase options a la carte such as Premium Stretch Seating. For a low price, this Premium Economy upgrade option provides extra leg room.

The airline’s reimagined, industry-leading frequent flyer program, FRONTIER Miles℠, enables consumers to ‘Get It All For Less.’ Customers earn Travel Miles and Elite Status Points fast and get rewarded for each dollar spent on eligible Frontier products. Travel Miles are redeemable for free flight fares on Frontier Airlines and don’t expire as long there is eligible activity on a member's account annually. Elite Status Points are used to track a member’s progress toward Elite Status. Status enables members to enjoy benefits like priority boarding, free seat selection, space available Premium Stretch Seating at booking and/or check-in, no change or cancel fees when changes are made seven days or more in advance of flight departure, and free bag(s) at Gold, Platinum, and Diamond levels. Like the airline, FRONTIER Miles is family friendly, and the program makes it easy for families to enjoy the rewards together, including family pooling of miles. Joining is free.
